Report on 'not so smart' Smart meters from the British Infrastructure Group fails to mention that the wireless signals emitted from 'smart' meters are a possible human carcinogen and that similar radiofrequency signals have been reported to have adverse health effects in a large number of scientific studies, including damage to fertility, foetal development, brain development and increased cell death.  Possible adverse health effects ought to be mentioned in all 'smart' meter adverts.

Study (Foerster et al 2018 Environmental Health Perspectives) confirms adverse effects of mobile phone use on figural memory in adolescents, supporting the 2015 study by Schoeni et al. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26474271).

A new website: http://wirelessriskassessment.org provides an example risk assessment for wireless technologies, as used in schools and other workplaces.  The Department for Education has said that all schools are expected to carry out a risk assessment for technologies before they are introduced and used. Please pass the Risk Assessment and documents from the 'Relevant Documents' page (on http://wirelessriskassessment.org) to schools.  Actions are needed to reduce exposures to hazards in the workplace.

Ofsted supports a ban on mobile phones in UK schools, as France introduces a law to ban mobile phone use by pupils in French schools (The Guardian). 

Despite Public Health England's Advisory Group on Non-ionising Radiation (AGNIR) having been disbanded, their inaccurate report and advice to schools has not yet been  corrected or retracted: the article in 'Reviews on Environmental Health' describes how PHE and AGNIR mislead the UK government, the public, organisations and other health protection agencies around the world regarding the safety of wireless signals. Decisions were made about involuntary exposures based on incorrect information; children in schools have not been protected.

242 scientists from 41 nations have supported an appeal to the United Nations, UN member states and the World Health Organization (WHO) requesting that they adopt more protective exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields (EMF) and wireless technology in the face of increasing evidence of risk. http://www.emfscientist.org/.

It is often incorrectly stated in the media that there is no scientific evidence that Wi-Fi is harmful. Scientific studies describing harmful effects are listed here.

                  Wi-Fi in schools

Recent years have seen a huge increase in the number of UK schools installing wireless computer networks (Wi-Fi, WLAN), wireless white boards, and similar devices.  Schools have been encouraged to use 'smart' and 'mobile' technologies (BECTA).  For most families there is no longer the choice of a school without Wi-Fi.

Wireless systems offer freedom to move around the school with laptops, tablets or smartphones and are easier and sometimes cheaper to install than wired networks.  Schools have invested money in the technologies and they have become a part of school culture.

However, schools, parents and staff are often unaware of the enormous number of scientific studies now published which demonstrate that mobile and wireless technologies, which emit microwave radiation, may pose a health risk, especially to children.  The science is published in scientific journals, often only available to subscribers.  The concerns of scientists and scientific studies are not often communicated to the public.  Thus schools rely upon the statements about the use of wireless technologies in schools made by Public Health England (formerly the Health Protection Agency) and AGNIR.

This web site aims to provide more information about the science and calls from doctors and scientists for greater protection of children and staff in schools.  The hope is for this information to become more widely known, so that parents, schools and local authorities will be better equipped to fulfil their legal requirements to safeguard the health and development of children in their care.

A safe place for children     

Most children have to attend school and they rely upon adults to keep them safe.

Schools are failing to safeguard children when they place them at significantly increased risk

  • of developing cancer
  • of physical damage (e.g. to DNA or cells)
  • of damage to their development
  • of damage to their reproductive health

Wireless technologies have been associated with all of these harmful effects. 

Children deserve a safe environment to learn, play, develop and thrive.  Schools have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for all children whilst in their care.
